Title: Danger in the dark
Is there ever a good time to travel through Mirkwood? The members of the Dwarven caravan, now on the eastward leg of their long journey, would certainly doubt that! What with all the recent rain of late, the road was churned to mud: nightfall found them making camp squeezed into a bend in the road and with little hope of onward progress through the quagmire the next day. Worse still, noone could get a fire lit in all the damp - not even GLOIN.
The old Dwarf stomped off to the edge of camp to mutter into the trees, when ... well, accounts differ. Some mention cold (scarce wonder it was chilly, on such a rainy night!) while others speak doubtfully of shadows and suchlike (hardly surprising, given the number of trees to cast them!). What is clear is that someone approached the camp - a Man from the sounds of it - and that he and Gloin exchanged blows. For someone of his .. ahem, advanced years, Gloin proved surprisingly hard to hit, his opponent even more so. Still, when torches were kindled the stranger fled.
Gloin's hurts (thankfully minor) were seen to and more sentries posted; the rest was left till morning. But come daybreak, noone could find tracks in all that mud. So who was the intruder and what was he after? Surely the unwelcome visitor (ULAIRE_NELYA) was no more than a Man? Most strange ...
