Dwarf-runes

The form of writing most popular with the dwarves of northwestern Middle-earth are the angerthas, or long-runes. The angerthas were adapted from the cirthas daeron: an alphabet devised by the Sindarin elf Daeron in the Elder Days. In the later days of Khazad-dum's glory, during the Second Age, the elves that had come to Eregion introduced the cirth to the sons of Durin, being excellent for stone-inscribing, who altered the alphabet to their own ends and popularized it, so much that they have become known commonly as dwarf-runes. Dwarves made use of such scripts as were current and many wrote the Feanorian tengwar letters skillfully: but for their own tongue they adhered to the cirth, even developing written pen-forms from them.

After the abandoning of Khazad-dum and long years, the Heirs of Durin altered the angerthas moria again, to the mode of Erebor, which is the script currently used by them and their cousins in the Ered Luin and Emyn Engrin.
