Mid-morning of a fine Autumn day and the house of healing stays a comfortable temperature for her patients. Which are a few, some being just mild cases of colds and flu from the changing weather. A gentle smell of herbs wafts through the air, like a hanging mist that remains comforting and welcoming to those who remain or enter to take a visit. Healer's move silently but offer smiles to their charges who either are showing spirits of recovering, which most are or those that have been about for a long time.
One maid, auburn hair spanning out over the light colored pillow turns her face to look at the sun filtering through the window. A gentle sigh comes from her lips, which only makes her wince. Riordan had sent Leona home as soon as he had heard she was wounded. Now wearing a simple shift to make her comfortable she touches at the wound on her arm, which is almost healed. The one that bothers her though, and no doubt will for sometime is the huge gash in her left side, right at her waist. That is the reason she is here in truth and she likes it none. Closing her blue-green eyes she turns her head to face the ceiling.
The comforting and calm aura of gentleness that pervades the house is about to be swiftly torn apart. At least once a week someone is bound to come running into the hallway, and now is the time come apparently, because there is the approaching sound of feet moving quickly. Just before the door is forcefully thrust open, there is a horrified shriek of: “No, don’t do /tha—!“ (BANG) A little boy with sand-coloured tousled hair jumps inside even while pushing up the door. “My mother’s hurt! She is!” The peace thus shattering in an almost deafening crash of silence, a healer finally collects herself to attend the case. ”Dorian, really,” Ellinor chides him mildly as she comes into the room aided by a maidservant’s helpful shoulder. “I’m bleeding a little, not dying.”
Almost on the heels of mother and son comes one who is not yet overly familiar with the Healer's House, although this is not her first visit to the structure. Isibel Taurdain follows in the wake of her cousins, here for a very different reason. This might be guessed by the bouquet of fall flowers that she carries, and her inquiring look around as she pulls the door closed.
Blue-green eyes turn to the sound of the frantic little boy and his mother who but seems to brush off whatever reason she is here rather idly. A smile spreads to her lips at the sight, but only when Isibel comes through the door does it echo in her eyes. Leona tries to sit up but the healer close by gives her a stern look and with a frown Leona obliges. Sighing she has to look up from her position instead of a level eye contact, she feels so ..weak. Turning her gaze back to her friend she can not help but smile again.
Ellinor throws a quick glance over her shoulder to see who came after (“Oh, hello cousin; a nice day, isn’t it?”) before doing a slightly ridiculous motion of hop-walk-shuffle over to a chair. The healer immediately addresses the situation, asking questions in a soothing, murmur-y voice and examining the offended body parts. Dorian, meanwhile, has sidled up to her chair from where he can unobtrusively stare at the rest of the room.
Pausing with a concerned look at her cousin, Isibel leaves her in the much more capable hands of the healer with only a quick nod to the comment on the state of the day. For she has come with a purpose, and nothing will stay her from seeing her task done, not even one of her favourite cousins injured.
It only takes a second more for her eyes to find a target; the bed-ridden Leona. The concerned look does not fade, but it is joined by a sincere if somewhat tense smile, as Isibel hurries over to the Karath's bedside. Before she can utter a word, an efficient healer apprentice takes the flowers with a promise to put them in water and bring them right out.
Finally! Isibel reaches Leona's side, crouching down to address her friend, "Leona! I came as soon as I heard you were here. What happened?!"
The normally clear brow of the visiting Taurdain is clouded with worry, surely only for the well-being of her dear friend. "Goodness, Leona, it sounds just horrible." Her crystal blue eyes are wide as she reaches to gently touch the other's shoulder. "I am so happy you are here in one piece, at least." The tone might hint at something more, but she does not voice it.
Lifting a brow, Leona is by far grateful for her friends company but with nothing to do but study a non descript ceiling till she had visitors, she now is able to catch something on Isibel's face. "Come now, what is wrong?" Leona gives her friend that 'no buisness' look that says she shouldn't try to hide anything. "Do not keep something from me.. I know you are hiding something."
As surely as a mask being pulled down, Isibel's face turns to a much more sunny smile, "Nonsense, Leona, I am not hiding anything of importance from you." A vague answer, but true in the most literal sense of it. And a small fib to a friend is far preferred to any utterance of worries over the welfare of anyone else out on the hunt for wargs and orcs.
With impeccable timing the apprentice healer returns with the flowers, in a plain vase that only heightens the beauty of their autumn colors. "Oh thank you," Isibel says to the lass, turning the conversation deftly. "I hope you like these, Leona, I did not know what flowers you might favor."
Quieting, a rueful look comes over her face and Leona laughs softly as the flowers come in answer to her next unvoiced question. Looking them over, the maid of Karath does find them beautiful. "I do like them a lot, and I thank you. They shall be able to keep me company when others can not and it will be a piece of the outside that will linger at my side. But you are not telling me something Isibel, who are you thinking of..." A guess perhaps but Leona can only assume. "Riordan?" She says it softly, knowing it to be a touchy subject.
The bright smile brought by the flowers evens almost at once into a look of nearly utter blankness. A look that questions without words, "Who?" Perhaps the moment it holds is time for the young Taurdain to compose her thoughts, for her smile returns with a wave of her hand, "Nonsense, Leona. Let's speak no more of such a subject."
Isibel leans forward, "Is there anything I can bring you? Perhaps some special treat, if they will allow you to have it?" Her voice has taken an enticing tone, to draw the stubborn Karath's mind away from other matters.
Now a grin spreads full upon the younger's lips. "Oh he was laying there looking so helpless when I went to see him. The medicine knocked him out but he was looking as if in need of comfort..that poor man" Dramatic? Yes! Oh yes! Just for Isibel too and the grin fades, Leona's eyes turning away to be lost in rememberance. But it changes as she looks back at her friend. "Oh but he seemed quite fine when he had to come in and send me home...none too pleased was he and quite repaired and moving. As for bringing me something...hmmm nothing I can think of except delightful company every once and awhile."
"But they will be needing archers..and now I can not help but feel my place is lost to them. Well he did what he thought was right and despite my good cousin's efforts to get me to stay, I am here." Leona laughs softly, watching the coloration of Isibel's cheeks. "Oh Isibel dear, please be truthful to yourself..." So she hadn't directed where but Isibel would know all the same. Leona sighs and closes her eyes. "Please be truthful....you know how you feel deep down.."
Stubbornly, Isibel chooses to address the former words, rather than the latter. "Leona, I am sure that once you are fit again they will welcome you into the ranks of the archers. Surely they cannot afford to turn down someone skilled and willing to protect the realm." The words are gentle but sure, accompanied by a tender movement of hand as Isibel gently brushes a lock of hair from her friend's forehead. At this moment the apprentice healer is back, whispering hushed words about letting the wounded lass rest.
Reluctantly Isibel stands. "I shall find a treat for you, Leona, and stop again tomorrow if they still hold you here." As she moves away her eyes search for her Taurdain cousin, but it seems the healers have spirited mother and son away for a more private visit. With a look back, and a small wave, Isibel slips out into the street beyond.
