Page created

New page

All Dwarves learn the ancient Khazad tongue of Khuzdul and can speak it fluently. It is a secret and guarded langauge, and because they do not wish for other races to utter it, they rarely speak it at all when outside the confines of their halls. It is never used in the presence of outsiders. Because of this, they learn to speak the language of their closest neighbors. For the Dwarves of Rhovanion, that would be Westron, the default language of the MUSH. Dwarves do have secret names in the tongue of Khuzdul, but they are rarely used, and are not even carved upon their tombs.

No Elendor Dwarven character, in any circumstance, may use the language unless in a company comprised exclusively of Khazad. However, even in Dwarven abodes it has become a language of lore in the Third Age. The Dwarves use it primarily for records, names, and rote expressions; In speech, it is typically reserved for high use on formal occasions. Also, in 'The War of the Jewels' (pg 395) it is mentioned that Dwarves also possess a 'gesture-language', known as Iglishmek. While this is not described, feel free to pose some sign-language here and there, though it should be treated as secretively as Khuzdul.
