This average-sized hobbit looks to be only in his tweens - bright-eyed and apple-cheeked, his round face shines with the unmistakeable air of Youth. He wears a buttercup-yellow waistcoat, its brass buttons polished to a mirror shine, and orange trousers that are fastened round his broad middle by a black leather belt. His eyes are the brown of ripe nuts, and the curling hair that tops his head and protects his furry feet is a fine shade of chestnut. A goosefeather quill protrudes from one waistcoat pocket.

Bywaters have always had a love of stories, and young Brandebras is no exception. Middle child and second boy of a family of five, he grew up listening to fireside tales at his Grand-da's feet (when his Ma wasn't finding Useful Things for him to do), and with his Da Torobald writing a book (that's "The Annals of Bree", if you please) and his elder brother Torebras having started out as a newscrier (he now pursues the more sedate occupations of book-keeper and poet), it's no surprise he wanted to do something with words for a living. And what better than a messenger? The young hobbit now proudly acts as messenger to the Town Council, no less - though Council work is ... well, in a peaceful place like Bree there's not an awful lot of it. Thus it is that Brandebras often runs errands for the butcher and the baker, and will happily carry messages for folk for a few coppers.

Brandebras is never without writing materials to jot down anything that has the ring of a Good Story to it. Whether he claims it's for Da's book, or merely for distribution via the gossip network, of which the Bywaters are the undisputed masters. He's still living in Staddle with his parents Torobald and Marigold and sisters Betony, Woodbine and Harebell, though he sometimes stays with his brother Torebras, who resides in Bree proper.
